Introduction:

Welcome to the Underserved Pathway. This is the only required module. Our purpose for this module is to review some key definitions. It is important to have and use a consistent language and framework when discussing topics that involve community health. As you progress through the other modules, the framework from this module will hopefully support your understanding of the issues affecting the health of the populations we discuss.

Objectives:

By the end of this module, students will be able to:

List population groups that, for one reason or another, are considered underserved
Discuss why each of these population groups is characterized as underserved
Compare and contrast the difference between disparity, inequality, and inequity in relation to health
List programs and organizations that form a safety net and strive to provide medical care to the above identified populations
List categories and examples of barriers to accessing heathcare

Requirements:

READ the topic "Who are the Underserved?"
POST responses to the following questions:
1. Identify three patient groups you had not previously thought of as vulnerable or underserved with respect to their health and health care. What has shifted your thinking?
2. Based on the Implicit test and the materials in this module, list three learning goals you now have to improve your capacity to meet the needs of vulnerable and underserved patients.
