How to Meet WCAG 2.1

There's not enough time in this training to walk through every step and approach to meeting WCAG 2.1 criteria. Nor is it reasonable to assume you can learn these techniques within one setting. Instead, this lesson will introduce you to a resource that will prove invaluable when it comes to applying these lessons to your work.

W3C has developed a quick reference guide that walks through the various techniques web developers can use to meet WCAG 2.0 criteria: W3C's How to Meet WCAG 2.1 Links to an external site.

There are a few pointers for using this guide. First, use the filter tab to limit the criteria based on the conformance level you need to achieve. For the purposes of complying with federal and state policy, we recommend selecting Levels A and AA.

Further down in the filter tab is also the ability to limit the technology you are using. If you are only working to fix animations or forms using Adobe Flash then you may want to limit your technology selection to Flash.

The second piece of advice is to expand the techniques and failures tab for each criterion in order to learn the technical aspects of meeting (or failing to meet) the WCAG 2.1 criteria.

Sufficient techniques are those that are considered reliable ways to meet the criteria. Advisory techniques are ways to improve accessibility, but they may not be entirely sufficient for addressing accessibility. Failures are things that are known to cause accessibility barriers. General techniques apply to all technologies.

To learn more about any of the criteria you can click on the "Understanding [Criteria #]". This will take you to a page that discusses the intent, benefits, and examples of the criterion selected.
