Please post a 500-700 word response to this week's reading assignment. Below are some questions I pose as prompts for this reflection; you do not need to answer all of them, but may choose one as a starting point for your post. This is more than merely a reading summary, but should be a substantive, thought-provoking comment that considers and cites specific examples from the reading to make your point.  You may also use your post to home in on other issues in the reading that you find particularly interesting and provocative.

    READING:

    1) Julia Ott, “‘The Free and Open People’s Market’: Political Ideology and Retail Brokerage at the New York Stock Exchange, 1913-1933”
    2) Herbert Hoover, “American Individualism” (excerpts, 1922)
    3) Eric Rauchway, “The World in Debt” “Reflation and Relief”  “Managing Farm and Factory”, in The Great Depression and New Deal: A Very Short Introduction
    4) Ira Katznelson, “Limiting Liberalism: The Southern Veto in Congress”

    QUESTIONS:

Taken collectively, what do these readings tell us about the different approaches American leaders (both in politics and business) had about the relationship between government and the private sector? Why did the Great Depression catalyze such significant change in government and business regulation? How did social prejudices and discrimination shape what the New Deal did and did not do? What seem to be the legacies of this debate over the size and scope of government?
