About this course

This course and its contents are meant to support graduate students preparing to publish their UW Master Theses or Doctoral Dissertations (ETDs). The UW Libraries and the Graduate School are partners in providing students with comprehensive resources as they write, submit and publish these academic electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs).

Learning Objectives

This course will focus on four main spheres of the ETD publishing process.

  1. You will learn about US law including copyright, Creative Commons, licensing, and sharing.
  2. You will learn about publisher policies including the use of materials in ETDs, self-archiving and preprints and embargoes.
  3. You will explore UW and departmental policies including formatting requirements, university agreements and preferred citation styles.
  4. You will explore disciplinary and professional norms including journal format requirements and using ProQuest ETDAdministrator.

Expectations

The learning experience in this course is a guided self-discovery and exploration of the focus areas described in the learning objectives. A five-part learning journey will take roughly 60-90 minutes per module to complete all readings, viewings and activities.
