In groups of 3 or 4, you are to create your own meme from scratch. Using your smart phone or computer, take a photograph/video of anything you think you can meme (just don’t take any photos of strangers), send that photo/video to yourself, and turn it into a meme using either Microsoft Word, Photoshop, InDesign, or a web-based meme creation tool. Once you have created your meme, answer the following questions. Only one group member needs to submit the completed assignment sheet.
Questions:
- Explain your meme. What is the photo/video of? What does it mean? Is there text? How does the text relate to the photo/video?
- Did you follow the “rules” of memes? How so? If not, why not?
- What multimodal elements are present in your meme?
- Would your meme work as well if it utilized different multimodal elements? Why or why not?
- Who is the target audience for your meme? How do you know this?
- How could your meme be remixed in ways that could be problematic?
- How could corporations/businesses/institutions use your meme? How could they misinterpret/misuse it?
