Instructions

This exam is due no later than 11:59 pm Sunday 2/12. It is an open book exam: you may refer to any course materials and notes. Please write and submit your own responses to the questions. You may discuss the material and your ideas with your classmates, but your written response should be your own. Anything within your answer that is quoted directly from another source, primary or secondary, MUST be within quotation marks, with the page number of the source in parentheses following the quotation.

The exam has two parts.

  • In Part 1 you are given five passages from primary readings assigned during the first five and a half weeks of class (through Class 09).  Identify each passage, and briefly explain what's happening in the passage and how it is typical of the genre to which it belongs.
  • Part 2 (Question 6) consists of an essay question related to the passages in Part 1 and the works from which they are taken. Respond to the question in an essay of 500-750 words.

Detailed instructions are given under the respective questions.
