First and Second Take-home Exams (20% each)
Two take-home exams will be given, due on Sunday, February 12 and Monday March 13 (Monday of Finals Week) respectively. The first will cover material (readings, lectures, discussion) from the first five and a half weeks of the course. The second will focus on the material from weeks 6 through 10, but will presume knowledge of the previous material as well.
Exam 01 will be due no later than 11:59 pm Sunday 2/12. It is an open book exam: you may refer to any course materials and notes. Please write and submit your own responses to the questions. You may discuss the material and your ideas with your classmates, but your written response should be your own. Anything within your answer that is quoted directly from another source, primary or secondary, MUST be within quotation marks, with the page number of the source in parentheses following the quotation.
The exam has two parts.
- In Part 1 you are given five passages from primary readings assigned during the first five and a half weeks of class (through Class 09). Identify each passage, and briefly explain what's happening in the passage and how it is typical of the genre to which it belongs.
- Part 2 (Question 6) consists of an essay question related to the passages in Part 1 and the works from which they are taken. Respond to the question in an essay of 500-750 words.
The third Posting assignment gives you an example of how Part 1 works.
Exam 02
Exam 02 will be due no later than 11:59 pm Monday 3/13. The format will be the same as that of the first exam. It will focus on readings covered in the second half of the course, Classes 10-17, though you are welcome and encouraged to refer to material from the first half of the class as well in your responses. Exam 02 will become available on Tuesday March 7.
