Thursday: jigsaw discussion guidelines

Jigsaw Discussion (55 minutes + final discussion, about 1h30mn)

  1. 3 groups of 3, each group focuses on 1 article (20 minutes)

Discuss your understanding of the article:

  • Unpack the text:
    • Did anything surprise you about this text?
    • Did anything puzzle you?
    • What is the author’s main argument? Walk through the way they argue it, perhaps draw a concept map or examine the different parts of the argument and how they relate to each other.
  • Summarize the text & prepare broader discussion:
    • What are some key take-away points?
    • What would you highlight if you had to teach this text?
    • Identify one section/quote that you would like to closely discuss with the rest of the class.

(we’ll take a break here for 5-10mn)

  1. 3 groups of 3, each group discusses all three articles. (35 minutes)

Designate a timekeeper [their role is to make sure that the group keeps to the allotted time for each part of this activity]

  • 30mn (3x 10mn): Discuss each of the three texts in turns, each “expert” [i.e., the person who is reporting about each text based on the first group activity] leading the discussion. (10 minutes per text)
  • Last 5mn:
    • Summarize the remarks that you want to share
    • Come up with one main question you would like to discuss with the class as a whole.

  1. Whole-Class Discussion (remaining class time, about 30mn)

How does thinking about these three approaches to sovereignty nourish our attention to processes through which people make claim and define themselves, individually and collectively?

Questions raised by each of the groups:
