Check in at least 3 times a week to be successful in this class, but I recommend 4-5 to ensure that you are seeing the most recent communications.
Attend class meetings
Make every effort to attend any scheduled class meetings.
Keep connected
Make an effort to get to know your classmates through discussion, chat, and or Zoom.
Buddy up with someone to study or review course concepts.
Check your UW email daily so you don't' miss important communications.
Budget enough time
The general guideline for college classes is to budget the hours spent in class, plus twice that much time for studying. A five credit class would then require 12 hours a week (4 hours of class time plus 8 hours of homework).
This varies greatly depending on the student—only you know how much time it takes you to complete a task.
Minimize distractions—turn off video games and phone notifications, find a space to work that allows you to concentrate or use headphones.
Stay organized
Use a calendar or keep an eye on the Canvas calendar. Write down assignment due dates from the syllabus.
Save all your work. Know where to find it. Many students create a folder with the course name and keep all their work there. Technology is not perfect—you should back up your work in case of a sudden Internet outage.
Take care of yourself
Take a break and relax everyday.
Make time to do things you enjoy everyday.
Move around. UW Recreation offers live and pre-recorded fitness classes and more.
Limit information intake. Checking news and social media constantly can cause unnecessary stress. Stay informed by occasionally checking reputable news sources.
Sleep. Your body needs to recharge and your brain needs time to consolidate learning. Aim for 7-8 hours every night.
Seek help if you need it. Each UW campus offers a range of student services focused on health and well-being. SafeCampusLinks to an external site. connects you with a trained professional who will listen to your concerns in a nonjudgmental, empathetic way.
