Overview

Welcome to Multimodal Composition! The purpose of this course is to refine your writing skills through classroom discussion, critical readings, and multimodal composition assignments.

For this special section of 182, we will be teaming up with the UW Library to publish your work with PressBooks. You can find out more in the PressBooks section of the syllabus.

The theme of our class will be Modern Monsters. We will be using Jeffrey Jerome Cohen’s essay “Monster Culture: Seven Theses” as a framework for our class. In his essay, Cohen lays out seven different definitions for monsters in today’s culture, along with examples from literature, movies, and history.

In class, we will be engaging with various texts to explore how we encounter monsters in literature, movies, songs, poetry, and more. We will discuss these encounters in class all together and in our small groups, and then work individually on our small assignments and major projects. All discussions and assignments in this class are designed to help you develop critical thinking skills as you engage with theory and texts and composition skills as you apply your knowledge to various assignments.
