Cereal Box Genre Assignment
For this assignment you will be given a cereal “genre” from the list below and create a cover for a cereal brand that you come up with. Once you are given your cereal brand style, research different conventions (rules, expectations) of that cereal and who that cereal might be marketed towards. With this research in mind, create a new brand of cereal that fulfills the conventions you found. You can choose to create this cereal box art physically or digitally. Once completed, turn in your cereal box art to Canvas (if you create the cover art physically, you can just take a picture of it and submit it to Canvas). There are some questions to consider below (just think about them as you are creating).
Cereal Genres:
- Sugary-sweet for kids (example: Lucky Charms)
- Multigrain and healthy (example: Kashi)
- Typical bran cereal (example: Bran Flakes, Cheerios – not honey nut, etc.)
- Sugary-sweet for everyone (example: Honey Nut Cheerios)
- Bags of cereal (example: knock-offs)
Things to Consider:
- Who is your target audience for your genre of cereal box?
- What kind of research did you do in order to learn the conventions of that specific genre?
- What conventions did you follow on your cereal box example?
- What conventions didn’t you follow on your cereal box example?
- What colors did you choose to use? Why?
- What is the title of your cereal? Why?
- What else did you choose to emphasize on the cover of your cereal box? Why?
- Where might your cereal box be located on the shelf? High up? Down low? Why?
- Why did you choose (or not choose) to focus on those specific conventions? What do they mean? How do they function?
