Op-Ed Analysis
Part One:
For part one, you are to answer the following questions about the op-ed you read for today. Only one person per group must respond to the questions.
- Who is in your group?
- Summarize the op-ed. What is it about?
- What is the purpose of the op-ed?
- Who wrote the op-ed? Is the author credible? How do you know?
- How would you describe the style/tone/voice of the op-ed? Does it fit the expectations of an op-ed?
- What is the op-ed in response to?
- What is the opinion of the author?
- Identify the lede. What is it? Is it a good hook? Why or why not?
- Identify the body paragraphs. What are the sub points the author is making to justify their opinion?
- What kinds of support does the author use? Is the support credible?
- Identify the conclusion. Does the author reiterate the main point and end with a "bang?" Explain
- How successful do you consider this op-ed? Why?
Part Two
For part two, you are to write your own letter to the editor responding to the op-ed. This is less about your opinion and more about following the conventions/expectations of a letter to the editor (don't worry about having any direct support for your opinion). Again, only one person per group must compose and submit your completed letter. Once finished discuss the following questions together as a group (no need to write them down).
- How are op-eds and letters to the editor similar?
- How are they different?
- What were you considering as you came up with your opinion?
- What were you considering as you were composing your letter?
- How were you able to present yourself as an expert?
- How were you able to persuade your audience to agree with your opinion?
- How did you refute or confirm the op-ed author's opinion?
- Why are op-eds and letters to the editor important?
- How can op-eds and letters to the editor be dangerous?
- How confident are you in your letter to the editor? Why?
