Week 09 Overview
Introduction
Throughout the quarter, we have read, watched, and listened to a great number of writers and thinkers. Aisha Harris, Claire Dederer, Sarah Z, Stuart Hall, Susan Sontag, Jack Halberstam, Natalie Wynn, Jen Sookfong Lee, Hazel Jane Plante, Laina Dawes, Mimi Thi Nguyen, Kathryn Yusoff, Kyle P. Whyte, and Gayle Kabloona have led our understanding of popular culture today, in the past, and in the future, not to mention the research you have done on your own.
You, too, have done lots of your own writing. In Sequence 1, you wrote letters about your own experiences, synthesized historical and contemporary texts, then synthesized your own experiences. In Sequence 2, you critiqued a historical subculture, then designed your own, first in speculation then by creating a primary source. You have likely already turned in 6000 to 7000 words for this class; including outlines and drafts, that number may be as high as 10,000 or 15,000. Congratulations on all these achievements!
Now, though, it’s time for you to critique your own writing and consider how your writing and metacognition (thinking about writing) has developed and changed over the quarter. You should already have a good understanding of what you have done well and what you may do better from your Writer’s Memos, which you have used to critique yourself in each assignment throughout the quarter.
