Service Learning Mini Grant

 

The Service Learning Advisory Committee will award money to student organization that promote medical student involvement in service learning and advocacy efforts.​​​​​​

For All Applications:

​Notify your regional SLAC representatives of the application for review. After their approval, send the completed application to the UWSOM Service Learning Team at somserve@uw.edu.

Eligibility
For pre-clinical students, any School of Medicine affiliated student organization, OR any group of students – in Seattle and throughout the WWAMI region—that includes at least 5 people.​​​​​​​  The requirement of five people is waived for clinical students.
What are the criteria to apply?

The activity, project, or event must meet the following criteria: 

  • ​Builds the capacity of medical students to participate in a sustained service learning or advocacy project.
  • Proposed funding items cannot be secured through donations.
  • As appropriate, involves students from across other disciplines (e.g. nursing, social work, etc).
  • ​Incorporates a critical reflection component that focuses on health equity and social justice.

Student representatives on the Service Learning Advisory Committee (SLAC) will be happy to advise your group in meeting any and all of these criteria.​​​

When does the application need to be submitted?
At least 4 weeks before the date of the activity, project, or event is preferred; 3 weeks before, minimum. The Service Learning Team needs time to look over the application and may need to ask you details regarding the event.
How much money is available for each grant?
Grants can range in size from $50-1000, depending on how much is requested in the application and the type of activity, project or event you are proposing.
Groups MAY NOT receive money in the form of reimbursement checks.​​  Expenses must be paid for with a departmental credit card either through an online order, or over the phone by a Service Learning staff member.
What can the grant be used for?  
  • Project supplies (e.g. bandaids, blood glucose test strips, gloves, etc.)
  • Advertising and communications for your project (duplication services)
  • Catering for a service learning or advocacy related training.  No alcohol allowed, per University policy.
    • For these requests, provide a list of attendees (UW-affiliation), total duration of event, and justification for catering.
    • Always send a receipt of the order to the somserve@uw.edu email for tracking purposes.
  • Honorarium for a speaker who has expertise that will enrich your service learning or advocacy project
  • Individual travel to conferences/training is NOT considered an appropriate use of these grants

If the idea you have for funding isn’t listed above, please contact the Service Learning Team (at somserve@uw.edu and your SLAC representative) to inquire as to whether your idea would be eligible for funding. ​

The grant can also be used as a seed for new projects or to sustain existing projects.​

What are the follow-up requirements?

​​The Service Learning Advisory Committee (SLAC) will periodically ask students to follow up and report on the event/training.
