Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Describe general trends in Chinese literary history from the Yuan dynasty through the present;
  • Situate specific genres, works, and authors within a literary historical framework;
  • Critically analyze literary texts using an appropriate repertoire of concepts, terms, skills, and approaches;
  • Communicate ideas and critical analysis in both oral and written modalities;
  • Assess and respond constructively to the ideas and analyses of others.

Students who write the final research paper (optional for 463, required for 563) will further demonstrate the ability to:

  • Access and assess secondary scholarship in the field;
  • Systematically present and support an argument in written form with reference to primary and secondary sources;
  • Use the language, formatting, and citation styles appropriate to academic writing in the humanities.
