- In the reigns of what kings did Amos prophesy? Based on the reference chart at the end of the syllabus, what time period does that put him in?
- Amos’ book consists mostly of oracles of judgment (“prophesies against…”). In Amos 1-2, who gets called out for acting wrongly, and what kinds of activities are they being criticized for?
- In Amos 5, the kingdom of Israel is called out for many of its activities. How are they treating people, and how does Amos (and God) want them to treat people?
- What does Amos mean by the “Day of the Lord”? What kinds of things are described as happening on that day?
- Can you summarize God’s complaint in Amos 9 based on what we’ve talked about with God’s covenant with Israel?
- In the reigns of what kings did Hosea prophecy? What time period does that put him in?
- Hosea’s book consists of prophecies centered around one giant metaphor, in which God is like a husband and Israel is like a wife, and the sign-acts that Hosea performs to act out this relationship for his audience. What information do we get about Hosea’s wife, Gomer?
- How do you think the original audience was meant to view the husband in this story (Hosea/God)? What does he do for the wife? Why might this have been unusual?
- What complaints does God have about his “wife,” Israel?
