M7 Best Practices in Supporting Patron Resilience

Overview

At the beginning of 598, we learned about SAMHSA's 6 principles for trauma-informed care: 1) Safety, 2) Trustworthiness and Transparency, 3) Peer Support, 4) Collaboration and Mutuality, 5) Empowerment, Voice and Choice; and 6) Cultural, Historical, and Gender Issues. In M4-6 we delved into specific types of trauma.

Building on A2 and in preparation for A3, this week we focus specifically on library best practices in TIC to support the resilience of individuals and communities. In addition to reading Tolley's chapters about the 6 principles, we learn about having social workers in libraries, and recent work on LIS about resilience and how resilience is tied to trauma-informed care.

While there are many disciplinary approaches to resilience (and they tend to focus on disasters), I like this holistic LIS definition from Aldrich and Stricker (2022):

“Community resilience is the sustained capacity for communities to withstand, adapt to, and recover from adversity and disruption. The concept is associated with increasing social support networks and social cohesion and minimizing risks, miscommunication, and trauma. Key to this concept is the ability of community members to work together to achieve positive outcomes—not just for themselves but also for individuals, families, and the community as a whole despite the challenges they may face as a community from a variety of causes.”

Objectives

1. Deeply examine recommendations for how to provide TIC care in libraries.

2. Learn how social workers have been included in library services and the effects.

3. Learn about resilience from an LIS perspective, the role of libraries in individual and community resilience, and how resilience can be supported using TIC principles.
