Read the two attached poems by Michael Longley, the Apparition and Ceasefire.
Comment on these poems. Here are a few questions to get you started.
In many ways, Longley follows the text of the Iliad closely. Can you point out at least two elements that are directly derived from the Iliad? There are also departures, of course – sometimes just a single word that alters the scene or introduces modernity into the poem. Can you point out at least two of such distinctively non-Homeric features? What effect do they have? What did they make you think of?
And if you feel like humoring your prof. here is the question I am most interested in: Did reading Longley’s poems in any way change your perception of the corresponding scenes in the Iliad? Did reading these poems make you notice something new or re-think anything about the Iliad?
