Salima Ikram, “Mummification”
- What was the ancient punishment for plundering a royal tomb or interfering with a mummy? Why might the Egyptians have used this punishment?
- According to Herodotus (5th century BC[E]), how does mummification work, and how does your vertical social class affect your treatment?
- What were natron, resins, and oils used for? What was the role of the mummy bandages? (pp. 54-56)
- What is evisceration, and when did it become a part of the mummification process?
- Soldiers who died in battle had unusual circumstances of death. How might that effect how their bodies were treated?
- What are some ways that embalmers tried to make the mummies more good-looking or “healthy” for the afterlife? (pp. 64-68) What does this indicate about what the Egyptians believed about their bodies and bas?
Wolfram Grajetzki, Burial Customs in Ancient Egypt
See syllabus for the pages you should read based on the first letter of your last name!
- What period(s) of Egyptian history did you read about?
- What (if anything) changed about how the body was treated during this period?
- What sorts of tombs tended to be used during this period (if it says)?
- Make a bullet-point list, as detailed as you can, of the different objects that might be placed in the tomb during this period. If Grajetzki suggests why these objects were included, briefly note that down as well.
