Week 3 Course Materials
Assignments due
- Week 3 Team Roles: all roles but Reporter due on Canvas before your quiz section; Reporter notes/summary due by Friday 11:59 p.m.
Biosphere L3: Sustainability
We will start by going over some new concepts: ecological disturbance and succession. We will then consider the effects of human activity on Pacific salmon. We will dig into clear-cut timber harvesting as a very specific form of ecological disturbance, and what effects it has upon salmon ecologies in riparian zones.

Biosphere QS2: Lawns
Your team role assignments should integrate information from all of the materials included below! Focus most of your time/note-taking on the "Lawns" chapter; you don't need to take notes on the others but do read/listen to/watch them thoughtfully and consider how they relate to each other. Think also about how you can apply and integrate information from this week's RAQ on ecosystem basics to the readings.

Biosphere L4: Salmon III
We will discuss colonialism as a form of major ecological discussion. We'll continue our discussion of salmon, and specifically will consider the central role that salmon play in the Coast Salish people, as well as other Tribes of the Pacific Northwest region. We will consider how colonialism not only changed the ways that PNW tribes were able to engage with and access salmon, but also the effects of colonialism upon salmon themselves.
