Module 2: Identifying lithics: artefact anatomy and fracture mechanics

Overview

We will investigate how archaeologists know when a rock has been humanly modified, and learn about the specific mechanical properties of rocks that result in distinctive types of traces on stone artefacts.

Objectives

Introduce basic fracture mechanics of stone
Use appropriate technical vocabulary to describe typical features of humanly modified stone
Identify key stone artefact attributes used by archaeologists to answer anthropological questions
Use R to visualise and analyse simple types of continuous measurements of taken from stone artefacts
