Access & Accommodations
Disability Resources for Students
Your experience in this class is important to us, and it is the policy and practice of the University of Washington to create inclusive and accessible learning environments consistent with federal and state law. Disability Resources for Students (DRS) offers resources and coordinates reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.
If you have not yet established services through DRS, but have a temporary or permanent disability that requires accommodations, you are welcome to contact DRS at 206-543-8924 or uwdrs@uw.edu or visit disability.uw.edu Links to an external site..
If you have accommodations established with DRS and have activated them for this course:
-
Extra time on exams and/or quiet space:
The DRS testing agreement is set up with DRS so that you can schedule to take your exams in their testing center. They have limited space, so please schedule all of your exams as early in the quarter as possible to be sure you have the space and time you need. (Because the Department of Chemistry is so large, DRS chemistry final exams are often scheduled in the Bagley Hall teaching labs to allow for enough space for everyone to take their exams. Let the instructor know if you are having trouble scheduling the final exam with DRS.) -
Disability-related absences:
We've built several dropped discussion sections into the course to help provide flexibility for all students in the course, but with the Disability-Related absence form, we can excuse additional absences as needed. This DRS-related absences form Download DRS-related absences form has worked for students with this accommodation in the past. If it will work for you, you may submit it to DRS with no changes. If you will need different accommodations, please set up a meeting with Dr. Ingalls before the end of Week 2. We generally do not retroactively apply an absence policy. This form will serve as the default form if no alternative is agreed upon in advance. -
Memory Aid Guidelines:
To use a memory aid in this course, you will need to submit your finalized memory aid to the instructor at least 2 full business days (and preferably 3) prior to the exam to allow for comments and revisions (DRS requires that we submit to them 24 hours prior to the exam). Your memory aid should be less than one side of one piece of printer paper and should not include anything that would be considered a "direct answer" to an expected exam question. You can find more information, guidance, and general examples from DRS here Links to an external site.. -
Extra time with quick turnaround and/or long-term assignments:
The Department of Chemistry recognizes universal access to education and has built in significantly more time than needed to complete our online homework assignments to allow greater flexibility and access for all students, including those with disabilities. As such, no additional time is needed. If you are unable to complete the assigned work within the time period, you should contact your instructor in advance of the deadlines for further guidance.
Religious Accommodations Policy
Washington state law requires that UW develop a policy for accommodation of student absences or significant hardship due to reasons of faith or conscience, or for organized religious activities. The UW’s policy, including more information about how to request an accommodation, is available at Religious Accommodations Policy Links to an external site.. Accommodations must be requested within the first two weeks of the course using the Religious Accommodations Request form (https://registrar.washington.edu/students/religious-accommodations-request/ Links to an external site.).
