Outcome 3

(outˌkəm·THrē) noun 1. Producing a well-rounded, nuanced argument that includes a variety of sources to create an impact in academic discourse.

Many different tools are used to create an effective argument. The impact those tools have depends on the extent of which you apply them. Evidence can be used as support solely with it's presence, hoping the audience makes the connection between your claim and the support. A strong paper illustrates that connection. By connecting your sources to your argument, you allow the reader to focus on your complex claim instead of the relationship between it and your evidence. Ultimately in an academic paper, you are synthesizing previously existing claims to form your own and a proficient argument places the spotlight on your claim each time a source is used. Unified evidence leads to stronger arguments as they signify more unified claims that aren't as easily disputed. Thus the choice of your evidence is important but the way your evidence is applied also carries an enormous weight.

The argument present in my Major Paper is unique in it's origin but characteristic with many sources used. My initial argument was more of a discussion, which is important to note because unbiased arguments create more meaningful responses, however I made an effort in my revision to establish a clear claim. This clarity helps the reader extrapolate their own opinions and not waste time attempting to "unpack" my argument. On a similar note, parts of my claim that were initially in my Major Paper were cut out to streamline what I'm trying to address. i.e. I don't talking about privatizing highways to raise the stakes of transportation, even though it was on my outline. Albeit an interesting solution, the tangent is not very well researched and focuses on economic concerns rather than preemptive solutions for diagnostic.

I also introduced a comparison to the ICA algorithm in traffic lights with current big-city models. The sophistication in the ICA algorithm over our established traffic lights is more apparent when compared to the blatant time schedules we currently use. The contrast highlighting adaptive and more responsive aspects of the newer method.

Rather than deciphering someone else's rhetorical choices, in Major Paper 2 I am being tasked to create my own complex claim that positively contributes to the discussion of traffic congestion. My writing is more motivated, alert, and cohesive when a clear goal is understood and I can easily relate to my work.
