Today, the transportation sector has reached a level where vehicles can be steered and moved without the help of humans. Technological advances have played an important role in the process of transportation innovation and evolution. One of these technologies is artificial intelligence (AI). Influencing artificial intelligence in transportation helps to increase passenger safety, reduce traffic congestion and accidents, reduce carbon emissions, and minimize financial costs.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Transportation: Traffic Monitoring and Flow Camera System، Speed camera radar product

Artificial intelligence (AI) has long gone beyond its theoretical existence in research centers and has been present in our daily lives. This technology has been quite successful in its endeavors. Most of us today are not aware that we use artificial intelligence daily. But what is artificial intelligence (AI) and what exactly does it do?

Simply put, artificial intelligence can be defined as a technology that empowers machines with human intelligence. With the ability of artificial intelligence, machines can imitate humans, do things automatically, and have the power to learn, just like humans. With the advent of automation, artificial intelligence (AI) can be replicated and time-consuming. Besides, AI-based systems have human intelligence and can learn over time, indicating that machines can perform analysis and decision-making on their own.

Realizing this unique potential of artificial intelligence (AI), transportation businesses have made significant investments to improve revenue and outperform their competitors. According to studies, the global market for artificial intelligence in transportation is expected to reach $ 3.5 billion by 2023. Here are some applications of artificial intelligence (AI).

Examining the applications of artificial intelligence in transportation justifies why the market is witnessing upward growth in this field and why companies should adopt this technology. Some of these applications are:

Self-propelled vehicles

One of the most important applications of artificial intelligence (AI) innovation is self-driving vehicles. Self-propelled vehicles, a concept that was once merely a science-fiction, fantasy, have now become a practical reality. Although people were skeptical about the development of this technology, today self-propelled vehicles have entered the transportation sector.

At present, self-driving taxis have started operating in Tokyo. But for security reasons, drivers are still in the car to check the taxi in an emergency. Similarly, in the United States, self-propelled trucks are being used to reap myriad benefits. According to McKinsey, 65% of goods worldwide are transported by truck, and with the arrival of self-propelled trucks, maintenance and management costs are reduced by about 45%.

Traffic management

Another transportation problem that people face daily is traffic congestion. Artificial intelligence (AI) is now being used to solve this problem. Sensors and cameras embedded in different parts of the road collect a large number of traffic details. This data is then sent to the cloud, where traffic pattern analysis and discovery is performed with big data analysis and an artificial intelligence (AI) system. Valuable items such as traffic forecasting can be extracted from data processing. Important details such as traffic forecasts, accidents, or roadblocks can be provided to passengers and pedestrians. Besides, people can find out the shortest route to their destination and help them travel without traffic problems. In this way, artificial intelligence (AI) can be used not only to reduce unwanted traffic but also to improve road safety and reduce waiting time.

What is an Automobile License Plate or ANPR?

ANPR stands for Automatic Number Plate Recognition and means CCTV. ANPR is a software monitoring system for detecting and processing vehicle license plate numbers. ANPR surveillance systems are capable of scanning more than 3,000 license plates per hour CCTV.

How does the Automobile License Plate or ANPR monitoring system work?

In this system, the images received from the license plate reader CCTV camera are first entered into the software as digital data and processed by it. When a car approaches the camera, the software takes several snapshots. When the car is close enough to the camera that the license plate size was sufficient for the OCR software, the license plate is scanned and the number is registered by the software and converted to ASCII code and stored in a list. This is repeated 10 to 15 times, and finally, after matching the list numbers, one item is selected and maintained as a license plate. This repetition is done to prevent errors and increase the accuracy of the device.

One of the most important parts of the Automotive, License Plate or ANPR monitoring system is the OCR or Character Recognition System, which is software that scans and processes license plate pixels to have the required size turned into a letter. (Letter) does. In fact, after matching a set of image pixels with a letter or number, the OCR converts them into ASCII code that can be understood by computer systems and stored in a file for later purposes.

What factors determine the accuracy of the ANPR system?

Various factors affect the accuracy of ANPR systems, including the following:

  • The quality of the lens and the CCTV camera used
  • Precise adjustment of lens, light, and brightness of the camera
  • Adjust the viewing angle of the CCTV camera
  • Camera location

What is the use of the CCTV system?

The ANPR surveillance system is used to automatically detect license plates in different places and for different purposes. Software designed for these systems has various capabilities and depending on the use of the location can provide different features to the user. These systems are used to control the traffic plan, even and odd plan, control the entry and exit of vehicles to the parking lot of commercial, office, public places and to control traffic and violations. The ANPR system can be used by connecting to control systems. Entrances such as barricades, bollards, and door openers are attached to allow authorized vehicles to enter or store their license plates for purposes.

ANPR system can record license plates of different countries, including Iran, and various software has been marketed by companies with different capabilities.

Using a cell phone while driving can lead to tragic accidents by distracting the driver. To address this, the Australian state of New South Wales plans to install advanced cameras on the roads.

New South Wales Minister of Roads Andrew Constance has confirmed that 45 mobile-behind-the-scenes detection cameras will be installed in different parts of the state by December.

Each of these surveillance cameras consists of two cameras, one of which is responsible for registering license plates and the other for monitoring inside the cabin and detecting the driver's use of mobile phones.

To identify drivers who are working with mobile phones, artificial intelligence, and advanced algorithms have been used. If the use of a mobile phone is detected while driving, the image of the offender is recorded. To prevent any software errors, an operator checks the image captured by the camera before sending a fine message to the license plate owner. The new generation of police cameras Mobile Phone Violation Camera

Using a cell phone while driving can lead to tragic accidents by distracting the driver. To address this, the Australian state of New South Wales plans to install advanced cameras on the roads.

These cameras can detect the driver working with the mobile phone behind the wheel of the car and issue fines. The cameras have already been tested over six months in a pilot program. During this time, the cameras are said to have scanned 8.5 million vehicles and fined more than 100,000 offending drivers.

In an interview with one of the publications, Mr. Constance likened cell phone entertainment to driving while intoxicated, adding that everyone should know that they will be fined for doing so. It should be noted that in addition to fixed locations, the cameras in question can also be installed on police vehicles
