It’s finally September, school is in person again and things are back to normal. No masks, no social distancing. Its syllabus week, and the summer is still not officially over. It's a Friday afternoon, you just finished class. You head over to your barber/salon to attend a haircut appointment and/or get your hair styled. You’re ready for this spectacle of a day. It's an experience that you haven't had in over a year, and you envisioning multiple scenarios and events that could take place to tonight. Everything you’ve gone through since the pandemic. All the stress, mental breakdowns, and loneliness you felt will no longer be apart of your life anymore. This experience is the end of your English 131 class that concludes with a portfolio of your work.
The portfolio you’re about to see is an experiment of my skills. It’s a collection of my attempts to create cohesive communication pieces I can be proud of, alongside those who view it. Keeping creativity and passion in mind, I wrote about things that came straight out of my pending thoughts.
Examples of outcomes 1 through 3 are shown in the tabs labeled those respective outcomes. The outcomes are writing points of interest we need to aim for during the class to guide us on the way to becoming better writers. These outcomes, as the course describes, involve selecting and catering to a variety of audiences, collecting and analyzing necessary information, creating cohesive arguments, and going through the revision process. All of the outcomes are further described in the reflections.
All of my assignments have been placed in the compendium, but giving attention to my work will show you a clear development of my writing skills over time. My reading response to Hanif Abdurraqib’s essay “Schoolboy Q Wants White People to Say the Word” demonstrates my ability to write for a specific audience as described in Outcome 1. My annotated bibliography shows how I can collect and use evidence appropriately as described in Outcome 2. My Major Project two on the racial wealth gap in the United States highlights my ability to consider claims and create my own arguments as described in Outcome 3.
As I was assembling my final portfolio, I was able to learn that the more purposeful and effective my writing was, the better my writing would improve. I hope you enjoy all the hard work I put into the portfolio! Your day is just getting started.
