Here are some concepts you should become familiar with as an undergraduate student researcher interested in sharing or publishing your research.

Open Access

Open access is an international movement that seeks to grant free and open online access to academic information. Open access is a publishing model for scholarly communication that makes research information available to readers at no cost, as opposed to the traditional subscription model in which readers have access to scholarly information by paying a subscription, usually via libraries. Copyright and Fair Use

Copyright protects original works of expression by authors, such as published articles, books, original video content, songs, computer software, poetry, movies, and art. Protection is automatic and is granted to work upon its creation.

  • Copyright includes all of these exclusive rights:
    • to reproduce the work
    • to prepare derivative works based upon the original work
    • to publicly distribute copies of the work
    • to publicly perform the work
    • to publicly display the work.
  • UW's copyright policy Links to an external site. is what your UW professors follow, and it includes a brief statement about students' copyrights.
  • Fair Use gives students the right to use parts of copyrighted works without permission from the copyright holder in assignments and unpublished research. Many student works are covered under Fair Use Links to an external site.; this video Links to an external site. from the University of Illinois Library explains more about Fair Use.
