Stripping Your Textbook
Directions:
For this assignment, you are asked to create a brief comic strip based on information presented in a textbook. Do not feel the need to turn an entire chapter into a comic; a short section should work just fine. Also, do not merely copy the exact words from the textbook – make the language fit the genre. Comic strips and textbooks often utilize different language; keep that in mind. You may choose to either hand draw your comic or use any of the free tools found online. Once completed with your comic strip, answer the following questions and submit your work to Canvas (only one person per group must submit comic strip and responses):
- Who is in your group?
- What textbook did you decide to “strip?”
- What section of the book did you decide to “strip?” Summarize the section briefly.
- What is the main purpose/argument of the section you chose?
- Describe your “stripping” process. How did you decide how many panels you needed? How did you decide on the art style? How did you capture the same main purpose/argument of the section from the textbook?
- How did the language change from the textbook to the comic strip? Why did you make those changes?
- Does the comic strip serve the same purpose as the textbook section? Does it relay the same information?
- How does changing the modes of communication change the text as a whole?
- Does changing the modes of communication benefit the text (in this case)? Why or why not?
- Would you prefer the textbook to be a comic strip? Why or why not?
- Do you consider your comic strip to be successful? Why or why not?
