1) Robert Remini states in the conclusion to his chapter on Cherokee removal that: “Despite the obscene treatment accorded the Cherokees by the government, the tribe not only survived but endured. As Jackson predicted, they escaped the fate of many extinct eastern tribes. Cherokees today have their tribal identity, a living language, and at least three governmental bodies to provide for their needs. Would that the Yamasees, Mohegans, Pequots, Delawares, Narragansetts, and other such tribes could say the same.”
What would Wilma Mankiller say about this statement? What would she say about the issue of tribal survival, tribal identity, and the effects of removal? After discussing Mankiller’s views, explain how you would respond to Remini’s argument based on what we have read and discussed so far this quarter?
2) “Neither John Harrower nor Olaudah Equiano were typical of the people who came to America in the late 1700s. Nevertheless, their writings can teach us much about the economic system and social patterns of British America.” Use this as the opening sentence of an essay. Then discuss what each text reveals about the economy, about class, gender, and racial/ethnic hierarchies, about religion and cultural life on British ships and in British colonies. [It is not necessary to discuss all of the above. It is fine to mention information from lectures as long as you focus on the two readings.]
