Week 9 Make Up

1) Why does Zia object to the idea of a model minority? What does it have to do with what she calls the "white-black race paradigm"?

2) During the 1960s Civil Rights Era, Helen Zia's friends told her, "Helen, you've got to decide if you're black or white" (p.4).  How did Asian Americans find their place in a society that discussed race in terms or black or white?  What connection does Zia see between the black civil rights movement and Asian American identity?

3) Speaking of the concept of the model minority, Helen Zia asks the question, “should Asian Americans accept, if not embrace, this “good” stereotype as an improvement over the ‘inscrutable alien’ image of the previous hundred years?”(p.47)  Explain her point. Does a good stereotype exist?
