Sp23--Jewish World Lit & Film

What can literature, cinema, memoirs, and graphic novels teach us about home, identity, gender and sexuality, and individual and cultural memory? In this course, explore the Jewish experience—or, because there is really no single “Jewish experience,” Jewish experiences—through the study of literature and film from around the world. We will cover issues pertaining to secularism and tradition; diasporas and homelands; modernity; questions of identity raised by the intellectual transitions brought about by political and social emancipation; sexualities; and enormous changes wrought by population shifts, world wars, rapid cultural transformations.
