Overview
Your reading journal is a place for you to keep notes on the weekly readings. Here you should jot down any thoughts you have on the readings that you think might be useful to you in class or for the upcoming assignments. You could, for example, write about:
- your reaction to the reading,
- any connections you see between the reading and other texts or world events,
- applications between the reading and class discussions,
- questions for discussion groups,
- details from the text you want to remember,
- or personal reactions to the readings.
The whole idea behind the reading journal is to give you a space where you can engage with the text in a low-stakes environment. We will devote the first few minutes of class to writing in our journals.
Reading journal entries are worth 10% of your grade and will be checked every week and will be graded on a complete/incomplete basis. You are free to write in whatever way suits you best, whether full paragraphs, bulleted lists, free-form thoughts, or anything else. Do what serves you best!
