Knowing Your Personal Strengths

Everyone has different strengths. Research is a great place to learn and develop those strengths, as well as find areas to grow. Sometimes it’s easy to forget the assets you bring when diving into any unfamiliar setting, such as starting a new job, joining a new lab group, or talking to a professor one-on-one.

Reflect

What are three skills, abilities, or characteristics you bring to your undergraduate experience? What are three skills, abilities, or characteristics you need to succeed? (Adapted from Michael Wilkinson's Gifts and Hooks Links to an external site.).

    • Keep these reflection points in mind as you continue through this module.

Imposter Syndrome

Feelings of not belonging or deserving to be where you are is called imposter syndrome, and is totally normal - even professors admit to having felt this way. Read more in this short UW article about managing imposter syndrome.

Knowing more about yourself will help inform how you manage time, reach out for help, and communicate what you will bring to and hope to get from a research experience.
