Course Syllabus

This course invites students to expand understandings of the impact of war beyond the sole realm of the human. How do nonhuman animals, forests, or rivers experience violence? What material and affective histories are contained in the rubble of destruction? What is the significance of the rupture of more-than-human relations in the aftermath of brutality? Engaging a diverse array of texts—from scholarly monographs to films to digital projects and fiction—students will explore some of these difficult questions, while also thinking together about the possibilities for resilience and radical hope.
