In-meeting security settings

The Security icon on the meeting control bar allows the host or co-host to adjust meeting settings and take quick actions to minimize disruptions or manage participants.

Zoom security features available to turn on or off during a meeting.

    1. Select Security icon in meeting control bar to make fast in-meeting security changes.
    2. Suspend Participant Activities: In the exceedingly rare event of an unwelcome visitor causing a disturbance in your meeting, you can select this option to suspend audio, video, Screen Sharing, and Chat. The host can re-activate each of these features when they are ready.
    3. Enable Waiting Room: during your meeting, you can toggle your waiting room on and off from this setting.
    4. Lock Meeting: select this option to prevent new participants from entering the meeting. You can turn this feature off again when you wish to allow participants to join. This can be handy for office hours or individual appointments that are all hosted in the same meeting room.

Change In-meeting Chat settings

View of Zoom Chat settings to apply to meeting participants.

The meeting host may wish to adjust Chat settings during a meeting.

  • Select the Chat icon in the control bar to open the Chat panel,
  • Select the three-dot menu in the Chat panel to choose who meeting participants can Chat with.
We recommend starting with "Everyone and anyone directly" to maximize opportunities for students to ask questions and interact with their classmates, but if you wish to limit use of chat for a specific meeting (such as during an assessment or presentation), you may wish to limit messaging to "Host and co-hosts" or "No one" for a time.

Suspending participant access to the meeting

Select the Participants icon in the control bar to move participants to the waiting room or remove participants from your meeting completely. Placing participants in the waiting room can be useful in cases where you wish to have a more private conversation with a subset of the meeting participants, such as during office hours. By contrast, we generally recommend only removing participants who have been disruptive and are not welcome in your meeting room.
