Welcome to Zoom

Five students pose against the milky way in the UW Planetarium. This self-paced training course is designed to familiarize you with the Zoom video conferencing tool and provide best practices and tips for setting up and managing secure, engaging class meetings.

This course is structured so you can learn how to schedule and run a Zoom meeting by walking through each Page in chronological order or by jumping between topics of your choice.

If you're just getting up to speed with Zoom, we suggest you start with the most important functions: scheduling meetings and managing class meetings. We recommend you explore more advanced Zoom features, such as Breakout Rooms, once you're comfortable with the basics.

Please refer back to this course — and use the navigation panels at the top of every page — any time you have a specific question about a Zoom feature!

What is UW Zoom?

UW Zoom is a web-based video conferencing tool used for online classes and meetings. Students, faculty and staff at the UW are provided free, licensed Zoom accounts for meetings with up to 300 participants.

Zoom supports adult learners with a platform for remote lectures, instruction, collaboration, and student engagement.

  • UW Zoom is integrated with Canvas, so instructors can schedule and start meetings from a Canvas course.
  • Instructors can hold online office hours with Zoom.
  • Students can access Zoom meetings, and watch recordings of previous Zoom meetings from Canvas.
  • Some advanced Zoom settings are only available through the Zoom web portal, which instructors can access.
