Guthman and Dupuis use the phrase "spatial fix" to conceptualize how our bodies have been colonized by commercial interests seeking to maximize profits by expanding demand for their products. The phrase "spatial fix" was originally used in social geography to conceptualize how global capital sought to increase profits by off-shoring production to places in the world where labor was cheap thus reaping more profits for capital. Spatial refers here to space, hence, moving production to another location. In G and D's creative adoption of this phrase, they are looking at the body as an internal space that can be also be colonized for expanding profits through economies of consumption. How does their argument challenge popular understandings of the obesity epidemic as a failure of personal will and self-control? How does their critique call for a re-allocation of blame for what is causing a public health crisis?
Don't forget to include a quote from one of the readings for today.
