Sight Translation Assignment

WHAT: Sight translation of a single passage (you'll choose one from three) selected from the parts of the Annals you've been asked to read in translation (so the Latin will presumably be 'sight'...but you should be familiar with what's going on).

The Latin exam includes two 'sight' passages, i.e., passages from texts not on the Reading List.  Like the prepared translations, these are 15-20 lines of text, and may be chosen from any of the categories represented by the prepared passages.  (And once again, for description of this exam, click HERE).Links to an external site.

As previously, for this 'assignment', here are the instructions you'll see when you open it up (see bottom here for link to the PDF of the assignment):

Below you will find three (3) passages taken from Heubner’s edition of Annales 13 (all passages you have read in Latin).  Some instructions (note addition of #5):

1. Choose ONE (1) passage – and only ONE -- to translate.
2. While this is untimed, aim to do the passage in 30 minutes (about the time you would allot to a sight passage in a Latin translation exam, which is three hours in length and features 6 passages in all, 4 prepared and 2 sight). Please indicate how much time you took (just for my information).  If it takes you longer than 30 minutes, so be it; if it takes less, fine. But do aim to complete the translation. 
3. As would be true in the translation exam, please do not consult dictionaries, notes, translations (!) etc.
4. Two suggestions: A) Aim for a translation that respects the grammar of the Latin as far as is possible without doing undue violence to the English language. B) If you hit a word or phrase you don’t remember, make your best guess or leave a blank spot; don’t spend hours fretting over it.
5. A 'sight' passage is obviously more challenging than a passage you've already read in Latin.  Try to read through the entire passage first and make some sense of it, then start in on your translation.  Make your best educated guess at vocabulary you don't recognize; in theory, however, you should be able to make sense of most of the grammar -- that's what you want to concentrate on (readers generally will forgive unfamiliarity with vocab; but basic grammatical mistakes...readers will be less forgiving about those (i.e., thinking something is nominative when it’s accusative, or ablative when it’s dative; mistaking a significant subjunctive for an indicative, etc.)
