Section Participation - 8%
- Due No Due Date
- Points 100
Section participation grades are based on the following criteria:
- attendance in section, including arriving on time and staying for the full class period (you must be in section in order to participate)
- preparation for section, including having completed the reading for the day and bringing the text with you to class
- participation in section, including contributing to discussion in some way, either in small groups or large groups
- behavior in section, including being attentive to the instructor, being engaged with the material, meaningfully contributing to discussion, and allowing others the opportunity to speak
Things that will negatively affect your participation grade:
- being absent, arriving late, or leaving early (everyone is allowed one absence without any penalty, but any further absences will negatively affect your participation grade, resulting in a deduction of 11% per missed class)
- not completing the reading or bringing the text with you
- not contributing to discussion in any capacity
- poor behavior in class, including monopolizing or derailing discussion, disrupting the class, being disrespectful or abusive toward others, and being on your phone or other device
General grading guidelines:
There are nine sections in the quarter, each is worth 11% of your participation grade. Missing more than one section will cause your participation grade to go down 11% per absence.
100% is given to students who consistently show up to section, have clearly done the reading, brought the appropriate text with them to class, and consistently contribute to discussion in a meaningful way
90% is given to students who consistently show up to section, have clearly done the reading, brought the appropriate text with them to class, and sometimes contribute to discussion; or students who are sometimes unprepared or have two absences
80% is given to students who consistently show up to section, may have done the reading, may have brought the appropriate text with them to class, but never contribute to discussion; or students who are often unprepared or have three absences
70% is given to students who sometimes show up to section, may have done the reading, sometimes bring the appropriate text with them to class, and sometimes contribute to discussion; or students who have multiple absences
10%-60% generally reflects the number of absences during the quarter (the more absences you have, the more your participation grade will be negatively affected)
0% is reserved for students who have never shown up to section
