There are two components to complete for the assignment this week, so be sure to read to the end.
We'll do a couple things in section next week. Continuing with our lessons on writing a good paper, first read the sample paper linked below. This is an example of a good history essay--it received a 96% (4.0).
Identify and highlight the various components in the paper as follows (if highlighting doesn't work for you, you can mark these components by bolding them, and noting which component you are identifying):
yellow = thesis statement
green = topic sentence or claim
blue = evidence
purple = analysis
red = historical context
Make a few notes in the document you submit for this week's writing assignment to answer the following questions:
-
- What specific strengths did you see in the paper?
- Are there any areas you think could be improved?
- It's not necessary to submit the highlighted essay with the writing assignment. However, please bring your highlighted (or bolded) version of the paper with you to section.
2. Einhard, Life of Charlemagne AND Royal Frankish Annals an. 775
Once again we have two sources: a source with a single author and a particular point of view, and a source whose authorship is less clear, with more of a "view from nowhere" perspective. The comparison of these sources is one way to get at bias. Using both sources, write an essay paragraph on Einhard's bias that contains a topic sentence/claim, evidence, and analysis.
