Required readings: Longman, “Scope of Wisdom Literature” (CCBWL)

  1. Longman talks about how the core “wisdom” books in the Hebrew Bible (Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes) seem distinct from other biblical texts because they have or don’t have certain features. Which features does he mention? (pages 16-19)
  2. Why do you think it is hard to determine which texts in the Hebrew Bible are “wisdom texts” and which ones aren’t?
  3. How did the traditional view of wisdom define the “worldview of the sage”? (page 27) What is your initial reaction to the old claim that sages had a totally different perspective than other people and leaders in Israel and Judah?
  4. What seem to be Sneed and Kynes’ major arguments about wisdom literature?
