Europe Since 1789
Europe since 1789 (HSTEU 303) explores the history of Europe from the crisis of the old regime to the present. A ten-week course can't be comprehensive, so we use specific episodes to illuminate themes and concepts. In the first half of the course we look at the "long 19th century" - a century opened by the French Revolution of 1789 and closed with the collapse of the European old regime in the First World War. The second half of the course we explore the aftermath of the war, the Bolshevik Revolution, fascism, Nazism and Nazi-occupied Europe, the European Union, and the place of Europe in a post-European age.
