Providing Feedback
Feedback Design | Instructor Presence
The Learning Design team encourages instructors to build in opportunities for effective feedback as assessments are designed. Effective feedback should:
- Lead to a goal - students should know the purpose of the feedback,
- Be clear - all remarks and suggestions are straightforward and transparent,
- Be actionable - students should know what to do next,
- Be timely - students should have enough time to adjust their work, and
- Be ongoing - the more frequent feedback students get from the instructors or peers, the better they can improve their learning strategies.
Creating opportunities for effective feedback also enhances instructor presence in online courses, a critical element for student learning and motivation for learning. The Learning Design team, with support from Instructor Development, provides tips and strategies for where and how to provide the feedback throughout the course.
