Week 1
Monday, January 6:
Course Introduction and Syllabus. Looking at some samples of various techniques.
Wednesday, January 8:
Demo: Making hollow forms with textiles. + Basic stitches for Hand sewing.
Homework due: Practice your stitches. + Make a hollow form over a chosen object with textile (as demoed in class) + Research the place, scents&culture for Assignment 1: Portal.
Week 2
Monday, January 13:
Demo: Machine sewing.
Homework: Practice on the sewing machine. + Project ideas for Assignment #1.
Wednesday, January 15:

Research questions: In the SAM's Joyce J. Scott exhibition find an example for each of the following and document by photo and notes:
- a material,
- a technique
- an installation method (look at the actual hardware of how the work is hung, stands up, etc.)
- successful aesthetic strategy
- narrative that speaks to you and it is connected to the previous 4 points
To do over the weekend and coming week; practice your stitches and explore additional techniques on an actual part/prototype for your project for Assignment 1: Portal
Week 3

Wednesday, January 22:
Demo: Guest Artist Talk and Workshop with Janelle Abbott (JRAT) / Deconstruct / Reuse. Found objects with textiles.
Week 4
Monday, January 27:
Due:
1. Portal destination research - 5 images + notes are due uploaded to the assignment on Canvas.
2. 1 finished sample (appr. 10x10") using a textile manipulation technique or a variation of one of the techniques from the workshop with Janelle
3. Assignment plans and sketches are due - in your sketchbook or uploaded to the assignment on Canvas + plan to have samples of planned techniques and materials this week.
Starting today, each student must bring their fabric scissors, tools, and materials for the project to every class meeting.
In class:
Project plans and work in progress discussions (group).
Demo: Peyote stitch beading discussion, demo and practice.
Get checked out on the sewing and tufting machines in class!
Wednesday, January 29:
Due: Installation plans and material tests - present them in class for discussion. Your tools and materials for work time in class.
In class:
Demo: Installation methods. Taking up physical space. Using the location to add meaning and structure to your work.
Project plans and work in progress discussions (one-on-one).
Project work class.
Week 5
Monday, February 3:
Individual work time with opportunity for feedback: Bringing it all together.
Wednesday, February 5:
Work in progress meetings. Installation demo in ROOM and LOOP spaces. trouble shooting.
Week 6
Monday, February 10:
Assignment #1 Due: Reviews
Everyone needs to have the work installed by class' start 11:30am! You are welcome to use the Room (combo:BIN) or the LINK (combo: SUM) spaces, in addition to the classroom space. Be mindful of installation rules we discussed in class. Do not share the combos with anyone.
Wednesday, February 12:
Assignment #2 presented
Demo: Wet felting technique. Making a 10"x10" sample
Week 7
Monday, February 17:
Holiday. No school today.
Wednesday, February 19:
Assignment research is due today. Review of flat felting samples. Troubleshooting.
Demo: Wet felting advanced: 3D forms.
Week 8
Monday, February 24:
Due in class: 3D felted hat shape (felted, ready to be finished) + Plans and sketches for assignment #2 are due.
Make paper model in class today, develop process plan.
Wednesday, February 26:
Have Paper model and work in progress with you in class.
Demo: Making adjustments, finishing.
Week 9
Monday, March 3:
All main felted parts are due. Strengthen your concept. Do additional research on the animal species of your inspiration.
Individual work time in class: assembling parts.
Individual work time. Individual meetings. Trouble shooting.
Demo: Felting over a 3D object (review of working with prefelts) Assembling. Review of embellishment options.
Wednesday, March 5:
Individual work time. Trouble shooting. No wet felting past this day.
Individual meetings. Last chance for feedback.

Wednesday, March 12:
Assignment #2 Due: Reviews and Runway show.
Finals Week
Wed, March 19 at 2:30pm via Canvas: Last chance for revisions on the 2 main assignments!
Images and your written notes about the changes you made are due on Canvas. Upload your revised project's images (including close-ups and explanations of the changes made) to the original assignment.
Any work remaining in 207 after this day will be discarded.
