Storyboarding Practice and Asset Analysis
Storyboarding Practice Directions:
In groups, find a scene from your favorite movie/tv show (or any random movie/tv show you can think of or Google) and storyboard it! Only focus on a few panels, but make sure that you have all the necessary elements when needed (movement, camera position, lighting, blocking, soundtrack, sound effects, etc.). You may choose to hand draw your storyboard or use an online storyboard creation tool. After you have completed your storyboard, answer the following questions. Only one person per group needs to submit your storyboard and responses.
Questions:
- Who is in your group?
- What movie did you choose? Summarize the scene a little bit. Why did you choose this movie and scene?
- How many panels did you compose? How detailed are they?
- What elements did you include in your panels? Why?
- How did you represent action in a static image?
- What is lost when the media and modes are translated from movie to storyboard? And vice-versa?
- What is gained when the media and modes are translated from movie to storyboard? And vice-versa?
- Do you consider your storyboards to be successful (will they translate well to the screen)? Why or why not?
Asset Analysis Directions:
In the same groups, share your asset charts with each other and discuss the following questions. If you haven't before, you might need to talk through your narrative a little bit. Explain how you imagine the visuals will transform your narrative. Maybe show a few if you have access to them. No one needs to turn in any responses!
- What assets did you add to your chart?
- What kind of assets are they (photo, video, animation, etc.)?
- Are these assets you already had? Or did you find them somewhere else?
- Are you planning on working with this project after this class ends? If so, are you considering copyright?
- How will the assets fit in your narrative?
- What will they add to the narrative?
- How do you imagine they will transform your audio narrative?
- How long do you imagine each asset will be on screen for?
- Do you have any spots in your narrative you are having trouble filling with visuals? Your group might have ideas!
- Do you have any concerns about the assets (or the project as a whole) that you would like to discuss with your group?
