This week we are reading pages 137-276 of Pauli Murray's Proud Shoes. By Thursday night, please post a 250 word response to one of the questions below. You must quote at least one passage from Proud Shoes.
Question 1: The successes and failures of Pauli Murray's family were influenced by the events of the Reconstruction and its aftermath. Look for examples of how the politics of the era affected the lives of the Fitzgeralds and other Black North Carolinians. What opportunities became open to the Fitzgeralds and others during the years of Republican rule in North Carolina. How did subsequent events and conditions narrow opportunities for the family?
Question 2: Describing her grandfather’s post-Civil War career in education, Murray writes: “he was a soldier in a ‘second war,’ this time against ignorance.” (pg. 204) Why was education so important to Robert Fitzgerald in this period? What does his story reveal about African American opportunities and aspirations in the early years of Reconstruction?
