Answer one of the following questions in no less than 250 words by Thursday 5pm. Include at least one relevant quotation.

  1. How are issues of Americanization portrayed in Out of This Furnace? How did Djuro (Kracha), Mike, and Mary negotiate issues of cultural change? In what ways did they become American?  In what ways did they remain Slovak?
  2. How did class and ethnicity interact in Braddock? Where did Slovaks, Irish, and “Americans” fit in the hierarchy of economic opportunity and political influence? What do Mike and Mary think about this opportunity structure?
