Compose a research prospectus. Your prospectus should address the following questions: 

• What is the historical problem that you propose to study? Be sure to introduce your problem or topic engagingly.
• What work has been done on this problem? How does your work differ from existing scholarship? How does your work advance understanding of the field? 
• What sources will you use to inform your understanding of the problem?
• To what conclusions do you think your research might lead?

Remember that a good prospectus will typically live on in the research essay you eventually produce, sometimes in the form of an introduction, a conclusion, or as part of the body of your essay.

Your prospectus should be between 1000 and 1500 (four to six pages) in length. A well-written prospectus is engaging and informative.
