Hello everyone. Welcome to my English 131 Portfolio for Winter 2013. I named it Deep, Deeper and the Deepest for the reason that the experience of taking English 131 is really very similar to join a diving class. It is fun, cool but also a little bit scared at some specific points.

English 131 is a composition class. All students are required to write a short assignment or a major paper every weekend. Before I enrolled in this class, I was stressed because many complain about this class have been spread around me. There was another factor made me so nervous – I’m not a native speaker of English. I felt the writing class was like a deep ocean. You knew if you kept practice diving, you could go deeper in the ocean and explore the beautifulness of the scene under the surface. You couldn’t even imagine how amazing that would be. But you were nervous in the first few weeks and it was so difficult to start. Fortunately, I have a patient and helpful diving instructor – Tesla Schaeffer! She guided me at the beginning, and she encouraged me through the whole progress. As time went by, I found diving easier and more interesting. I even started looking forward to the next practice. This is what happened, hard to believe! Essays written by me became better and I was excited to read Tesla’s comments every Friday night. Those were like rewards for my hard work.

I also met 4 other “teachers” included a fish, a shell, a sea star, and a pearl undersea. Each of them taught me a skill or told me a truth. Because of their great help, I fulfilled all my course outcomes. The class is about to end and I choose 4 assignments as my “Big 4” to present in this portfolio. Short assignment 2 and Major paper 1 have a topic about language. They are my earlier works. I talked about a unique discourse community in short assignment 2 and analyzed why both standard languages and dialects are important in major paper 1. Short assignment 3 and Major paper 2 are dealing with the academic terms used in the universities. Those are later works.  I made lots of effort in revising them and they represented my best writing. I hope you can find my improvement in writing by reading them. I’m sure the improved writing skill will help me to success the upcoming university course works.  I hope you will like them.

I upload my “Big 4” on this page. If you are interested in reading them prior to go over my portfolio, go ahead and do so. Now, please start to examine how qualified I am as a student.

Enjoy!!
