Outcome 1

For most cases, the major goal of a writer in their work is to convince their reader to agree with them on their argument. In order to accomplish this, a writer has to be able to connect with their audience. This is why outcome one is so important because it involves audience awareness and flexibility of writing for different contexts.    A writer has to be aware of the audience that their work is targeting because audiences vary in terms of age, education level, and fields of expertise. Therefore, they need to take into account these differing aspects of varying audiences and accommodate their writing accordingly. Similarly, there are many contexts of writing whether for an English class, a scholarly publication, or a grant proposal. Once again, the writer has to be aware of these changing contexts and shift the tone and style of their writing to fit the context of the assignment.

My second short assignment titled “Booker and Wolf’s Analysis of Legally Blonde best demonstrates my ability to fulfill outcome 1. For this assignment, I had to be especially conscious of the style and tone choices I was making in order to suit the styles of the two scholars Booker and Wolf. At first I struggled with writing in the style of another person because I'd never done this kind of writing before, but after studying the conventions the writers used, I was able to adjust my writing to meet these conventions. The flexibility in my writing to accommodate for Wolf’s style and tone is demonstrated when I articulate, “I’m so glad I came across this movie because it’s such a great example of how pop culture can serve to effectively CHALLENGE traditional values versus ATTACKING them with its implications about gender values and stereotypes”(2). I noticed that Wolf is fond of the caps lock when it comes to emphasizing certain points, so this sentence shows how I replicated this aspect of his style. This instance also represents how I capture the essence of Wolf’s argument that popular culture is an effective way to challenge traditional values. Furthermore, this sentence exemplifies the positive tone I carried throughout Wolf’s letter to show how Wolf is more confident in the idea that popular culture texts are effective at breaking stereotypes and traditional values. In contrast to Wolf, Booker had a more cynical view in which popular culture works constituted as academically useful and challenging to traditional values. I captured this cynical tone when I write, “I agree that popular culture can be an important way in which traditional values can be challenged and that Enlightenment, progressive thinking can be incited, but I don’t think this particular work does either of these things”(3). This moment demonstrates my ability to articulate his argument while exemplifying his tone as reluctant to deem just any work of popular culture as challenging to traditional values.  I was also conscious of audience awareness throughout these letters which is apparent when I state in Wolf’s letter, “It comes to my attention that it has been a while since I last conversed with you, but I recently watched a movie that I was interested in hearing your opinion of because I know you also think popular culture should challenge traditional values, and this movie did just that”(1). This moment shows that I am acknowledging Booker, my audience, as a fellow scholar who believes similarly in popular culture’s academic importance, and I’m making it clear to him that my letter involves a subject matter that he is also interested in.

Throughout the letters, I demonstrate my ability to cater my writing to the context and style that is appropriate thus showing my understanding of this outcome.
