Magnificent and Supreme Beings,

The first outcome that every writer must incorporate in their work is the ability to effectively write in various contexts. This is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate how they can adapt their writing to different situations, to mold and shape the style, tone, and conventions (to name a few) to best convey the subject of their work to any audience. This is of utmost importance for the writer to keep in mind – if they do not keep these components of their writing appropriate to their intended audience, then the audience may not fully comprehend what the writer wants to convey. This would result in an ineffective, and possibly awkward, writing piece. The first outcome proves vitally important for good reading and writing practices in general. When reading a work by another writer, for example, actively assessing the style, tone, and conventions of the work will allow one to determine the intended audience of the piece. This practice will also give the reader insight into how each aspect of writing is tailored specifically to the intended audience. As mentioned before, a good writer must be able to craft their writing piece and adjust its writing elements – tone, word choice, mode of inquiry, and more – to convey the message or purpose of the writing piece most effectively to the intended audience.

I believe that my first major paper, a proposal to adapt J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion into a visual art medium, best demonstrates the first outcome. In writing this piece I keep in mind who my intended audience is and I modify my writing to communicate clearly with that audience. First, I clearly identify my intended audience, a potential producer, by addressing them simply as “Producer” (Mititean 1) at the start of the proposal. I have also written the proposal in second person to address the producer directly; for example, in the first paragraph of my proposal I write “I would like you to consider adapting The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien to a medium other than literature” to convey my seriousness about the proposal. This point of view draws the reader’s attention to the proposal and keep them engaged while reading, granting me a higher chance that it would be considered.

Next, I avoid using casual language and attempt to use more sophisticated word choice. This style shows professionality and further conveys my seriousness about the proposal; it helps demonstrate how I pitch my writing toward my specific audience. For example, in the sentence “[o]ne major challenge is how to encapsulate the story of The Silmarillion into a single piece of art, since it spans a vast length of time and provides an extensive written background” (Mititean 1) I use more sophisticated vocabulary words such as “encapsulate”, “vast” and “extensive” which helps show a potential producer that I understand what I write about and therefore helps convince them that my proposal is at least worth reading.

Lastly, I demonstrate my ability to assess the effects of my writing choices in the Critical Reflection and Process Log portions of the document. In these sections I discuss multiple components I incorporated into my work, including my greeting, point of view, word choice, tone and style, and organization and how they convey my purpose to my audience. For example, in my explanation of how I organized the proposal, I state that “I begin my proposal with the benefits to draw the reader in to my idea, instead of starting with its negative aspects which may cause the producer to simply put the proposal aside and fail to consider it” (Mititean 5). This reflects my ability to process my own work and understand why I made the choices I did for my writing. It also reflects the way I place myself in the intended audience’s place as I re-read my own writing so that I may imagine how this audience would react, which helps demonstrate my understanding of the audience.

This outcome improved my writing piece primarily by encouraging me to place myself in the intended audience’s position as I read and re-read my own writing so that I may imagine how this particular audience would react. This technique allowed me to modify my writing to cater specifically to this audience and situation, to expand my thinking by prompting me to place myself in the reader’s perspective rather than my own, and has given me a perfect opportunity to practice “adapting” my writing to different situations.

Below I have attached one of the three major papers I have written. I hope you enjoy what you read, and that it proves a fitting example of how humankind apply the first outcome in writing.
